The hand crafted box is made in the centuries old tradition of hand pouring many layers of lacquer over the box.
Over a period of several days, each layer is dried and hand polished to finally create a deep rich hard finish that is impervious to heat and alcohol.
The top of the box is inlaid with a beautifully detailed etching of an old world planisphere map and coated with deep lacquer finish.
The Old World planisphere was created by Great Dutch iconographer Henri Hondius in 1630.
The detailed map displays the accumulated geographical knowledge during a period of intense world exploration.
Hondius was one of the most accomplished engravers of his day and raised the art of map ornamentation to its
highest level of sophistication using an elegant baroque framework and delicate shading.
Artists developed a secret embossing technique based on their fascination with the iridescent nature of rare
South American butterfly wings.
The map etching has an iridescent quality that changes colors and contrast when viewed from different angles.
