This beautiful handmade box was crafted with pride and family tradition by the Highlanders of the Tatra Mountains in Southern Poland.
Farmers and shepherds settled the Tatra region of the Carpathian mountains called Podhale toward the end of the first millennium AD.
During the winter months as their fields lay under snow, the farmers spent their days working wood.
Every member of the family participated in the decoration of these fine boxes.
Most local art cooperatives were members of Cepelia, the national arts and crafts institution,
which set up very stringent controls and standards on craft production and completely monopolized trade in crafts.
This policy resulted in rigid, inefficient production of very high quality, non-commercialized handmade products.
Wood burning and wavy solid brass inlays were added as decoration techniques.
Colored stains added a new dimension to the designs and varnishes are applied to protect the decorated surfaces.
The top of the box is inlaid with the image of a ship's anchor over a wheel.
The perimeters of the wheel and anchor are bordered in a wavy inlaid brass.
The ship's wheel design uses intricate Tatra word burning techniques which give it the appearance of tooled leather.
The box utilizes hidden brass hinges and inlaid splines to strengthen the mitered corner joints.
A custom engraved brass plaque can be mounted on the inside lid of the box.
The exterior of the box measures 4 inches (10.2 cm) square, 1 5/8 inch (4.1 cm) tall, and the box weighs 4.2 ounces (119 grams).
