Full Description:
This fascinating instrument is a great conversation piece, and has been used for years to predict the weather.  Admiral FitzRoy used the storm glass in 1834 - 1836 on his historic voyage with Charles Darwin.  Ambient temperature affects the liquid's solubility, resulting in different formations of crystals.  The rate of temperature change also affects the crystal growth, so the storm glass crystals retain a recent history of temperature changes.  Two identical storm glasses in different cities at the same temperature will display different crystal patterns.  The sealed glass is not exposed to atmospheric pressure changes associated with weather systems.  Instructions for interpreting the crystal patterns are included.  The Admiral FitzRoy Storm Glass with Hardwood Base measures just under 6 inches (15 cm) tall, 2 1/4 inches (5.8 cm) in diameter, the hardwood base is 4 1/2 inches (11.5 cm) in diameter, and the Storm Glass weighs 15 ounces (426 grams).
