Full Description:
The small helmet compass was originally designed for use in lifeboats.  This is a beautifully crafted, quality reproduction of an antique Binnacle Compass.  The Regular Sized Gimbaled Binnacle Compass is enclosed in a polished brass case with a round glass window.  It can be illuminated with the built-in oil lamp on the side.  The compass is has an air damped compass card, a solid brass enclosure, and is fully gasketed.  The compass measures 7 inches (17.8 cm) tall, 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide, the base is 7 1/4 inches (18.4 cm) in diameter, and the compass weighs 3 1/4 pounds (1.5 kg).  We have recently improved this compass by fabricating the case using heavy 20-gauge brass.  This regular sized Binnacle Compass is approximately half the size of the large sized Binnacle Compass.  While this compass is fully functional, it is not intended for marine navigation.  This compass can be ordered with a custom brass plaque mounted on the oil lamp enclosure.

The Large Gimbaled Binnacle Compass was originally designed to be the ship's main compass and typically mounted above the ship's wheel.  An internal oil lamp would illuminate the compass at night.  The Large Gimbaled Binnacle Compass is enclosed in a heavy polished brass case with a front round glass window.  It can be illuminated with the built-in oil lamp on the right side.  The compass card is air-damped and the brass enclosure is fully gasketed and air tight.  The internal gimbaled compass is 8 inches (20.3 cm) in diameter and the gimbal ring measures 9 1/2 inches (24.1 cm) in diameter.  The compass measures 14 inches (35.6 cm) tall, 16 inches (40.6 cm) wide, the base is 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, and the compass weighs 12 pounds (5.5 kg).  While this compass is fully functional, it is not intended for marine navigation.  This compass can be ordered with a custom brass plaque mounted on the oil lamp enclosure.

This is a very large, solid brass, lightly-distressed reproduction of an antique Binnacle Compass.  Its massive size certainly commands your attention when you see it in a room or on display.  This large Binnacle Compass is approximately twice as large as the regular sized Binnacle Compass and weighs almost four times as much.  Real antique Binnacle Compasses this size usually cost over $3,000.  Please check these dimensions before ordering as this is a very large compass, suitable for store and restaurant displays and often too large for an office.
