Brass Miner's Compass $50
Hardwood Case $17
This Stanley London Solid Brass Compass in Hardwood Case is a reproduction of the gift given by Robin Wright
Penn (Theresa Osborne) to Kevin Costner (Garret Blake) in the movie "Message in a Bottle."
A little known fact is that the compass chosen for the movie wasn't a nautical compass at all, but rather a
Stanley London solid brass reproduction surveying compass.
The movie's compass had a brass plaque mounted on the inside lid of the hardwood case engraved
"So you'll always know where you are and where home is. Love, Theresa."
The brass compass is a heavy solid brass reproduction of a handheld European Miner's compass.
A front sight folds up, and the window in the lid has a scribed line to serve as a rear sight.
The compass can determine both the magnetic heading of an object, as well as its angle of
elevation or declination.
A pendulous arm can read the vertical angle of an object of elevation or declination.
The inclination scale is printed mirror imaged so that when taking a elevation or declination measurement,
the lid with the internal mirror can be placed in the 45 degree position,
and the angle can be read while simultaneously viewing the object.
The top of the compass has a Natural Sine table to assist in trigonometric calculations in the field.
The compass rose is marked in degrees and has the original old markings.
The letter "O" is commonly used to abbreviate "West" in the southern hemisphere.
The compass has a needle lift mechanism to protect the compass jewel when being transported.
Closing the lid activates the needle lift mechanism and opening the lid frees the needle.
The compass measures 3 1/8 inches (7.9 cm) in diameter, 1 3/8 inches (3.5 cm)
thick, and weighs a very solid 1 pound, 3 ounces (540 grams).
The Miner's Compass is beautifully polished to a high luster.
It is available with a beautiful lined hardwood case.
Your personalized inscription can be engraved on the back
of this compass, or custom brass plaques are available for the outside
and/or inside lid of the optional hardwood case.
You can use the movie's wording on the inside plaque and just change "Theresa" to your name.
The Brass Miner's Compass sells for only $50.
The hardwood case is available for $17.
